Q: What is psychotherapy/therapy/counseling?

A: It is a series of supportive, interactive sessions to develop your insight or emotional understanding, modify behaviors and perceptions and produce change which works for you in your life.

Q: How does it work or what’s the process?

A: The initial consult is to talk about mutual expectations and to find out if you’d like to work with me. Then in the first few sessions, I get to know you, your history as is relevant and the issues you want to explore. We then talk about goal-setting so we have a context from which to begin.

Q: What’s most important, a male or female therapist, convenient access to/from home or work, whether my insurance covers the cost, my money, time or effort?

A: All of the above is important and it should be weighed against your peace of mind and whether you feel comfortable with me as a person and my way of working as a therapist.

Q: How do I know that you’re the therapist for me?

A: This may depend on a few things you should consider. Let’s take a look at the following.

Q: Do you speak my language: Spanish, French, Creole?

A: Yes I do speak and understand all three languages as well as English. I’m also familiar with and accepting of different cultures and values.

Q: What are your credentials?

A: I am licensed in the state of Florida to provide clinical psychotherapy. My undergraduate degree and graduate degrees are from the University of Western Ontario and University of Toronto respectively.

Q: Are you experienced in your profession?

A: I have 18 years of experience in the mental/behavioral health and medical health fields. I counsel individuals, couples, seniors, families, and groups. My areas of expertise include but are not limited to, depression, anxiety, anger management, self esteem and self confidence, conflict resolution, job stress, substance addiction, grief and loss, sexual abuse, post-traumatic stress and dissociation.

Q: Can appointments be scheduled for my convenience?

A: Day, evening and Saturday appointments are available. Appointments are usually once a week. At times of emergency, more frequent appointments may be scheduled.

Q: Do you have a particular style or approach in counseling?

A: I do utilize a cognitive-behavioral approach which is geared to have you examine your thoughts and how they impact your feelings and in turn direct your behavior or reaction to issues, people or situations. Humor, confrontation, active interaction, supportive feedback and therapeutic “home-work” as well as goal-setting are all employed. I believe that “you are what you think” and knowledge is useless unless its transferred into action!

Q: How much does it cost?

A: The first, initial consult is free. I accept, medicare, ppo’s ( preferred provider organizations), self pay and single case priviledges with appropriate hmo’s (health maintenance organizations). Co-pays and self pay rates re sometimes negotiable.
